New video

Hello and good evening!

Here's my latest tutorial. If you read my blog post from earlier about how sucky the leopard print nail stickers were... I've found a way of using them!

I've made these leopard half moon nails, and I think they're super awesome. They're really rockabilly, different and fun.

I'm gonna leave you with a sad note. From tomorrow, March 1, GFC will no longer be around. So if you are following my blog through GFC, keep this in mind.. I'm hoping to find another way for you guys to follow my blog. I'm sad about it, it makes me so happy to see new followers every time I check in on my blog.. I was even planning a new giveaway at 300 (only 9 more!) but unfortunately that won't happen thanks to Google shutting down GFC. I hope you will still enjoy my blog, and please follow on Twitter and Facebook to get your updates from me!

Anyways... Here's the video! (Watch in HD!)

Rockabilly Tuesday #4

Each Tuesday or every other Tuesday I will make a little post on how you can incorporate rockabilly items into your everyday you and maybe one day you'll be a total rockabilly chick! I'm gonna tip about everything from make up to jewellery, from music to models, this to that etc. Hopefully it'll be a success, I don't know, but you never know before you try right?

Today's topic is rockabilly style inspiration. We've previously read about cherry and leopard print when it comes to styling tips, and we've seen some examples of rockabilly music. I often get questions from aspiring rockabilly girls on what clothes they should wear, and how to style their hair. I think it's really important that you make the style suit you, not the other way around. Don't copy a rockabilly girl you googled, but take inspiration from her and work with it till you feel comfortable with it. If you're walking around like a copy you won't feel like yourself, and it might seem like you're either trying too hard or that you're insecure. My biggest tip is to work yourself into the rockabilly style, don't make the rockabilly style change you! I know that many of my readers are starting their journey towards rockabilly, and I really hope that this tip will make them happy with their new look!

Today I'll post some great pics that'll show you where to start! They are all (what I feel) qualified as rockabilly, but they are different from each other. Maybe you'll find a style that you really like, or maybe you'll get some new tips?

Attitude Rockabilly

Cat eye sunglasses, polka dot bikini top, Bettie bangs and a bandana. Spot on!

Girly and feminine rockabilly

Vintage sunglasses, bandana as a scarf, red lipstick, reversed faux bangs.
A different take to the style, very girly and elegant.

The worker

The ultimate rockabilly sweetheart, Bernie Dexter. Striped top, Bettie bangs, bandana and a denim overall.
Rosie the Riveter inspired.

The couple

This photo is sooo adorable. Teenage sweetheart rockabilly chick with victory rolls, red nails, red lipstick and a cute shirt. The guy's hair is combed back, he's tattoed and he's wearing a bowling kinda shirt. Adorable couple!

The crazy hair rockabilly girl

Fabulous green turquoise blue hair, big bouncy curls, small victory rolls and a quiffed (new word) fringe. Heavily tattooed, red lipstick and some leopard print going on.
I love this look, but I'm not brave enough to dye my hair green!

The down to Earth rockabilly

Being a rockabilly chick doesn't mean you have to wear the standard leopard prints, the bright red lippy and the huge heavily dyed hair. LOOK at this girl. A mix of vintage clothes with earthy brown tones, amazing cat sunglasses and a head scarf. I think she's amazing, and she's still very rockabilly even though she's different from the other we've seen so far. Love it!

The elegant housewife rockabilly

Victory rolls and a nice elegant black dress. Her make up isn't overboard crazy rockabilly, it's more simple and vintage looking. Gorgeous!
I believe this is the wonderful Fleur DeGuerre.

At the beach rockabilly

Cherry print (check!) swimming suit, red lipstick, huge curly hair and a scarf tied around her head forming a loose bow. Perfect for a beachy day!

All photos are taken from around the internet, but the links are shown in the pictures.

I hope this little inspirational post have helped you out if you're still finding your inner rockabilly. There's plenty of takes on the rockabilly style out there. Do some research, collect pictures of styles you like and work with them, have fun and play around with the different styles. You might learn that some styles are not for you, and that some styles you were just made for!

I happily answer questions about anything rockabilly (and other things for that sake) both here on my blog, on my Facebook page and on my Twitter. Come join me, it's fun!

A different blog post: My native country

Hello people, and hello all new followers! Had a bit of a follower boom here lately, and therefore I decided to do this blog post. As you all know, I'm not a native English speaker. I guess that's pretty obvious from both my written and spoken English. I am, however, from Norway, and I've made a little introduction to my homeland with a rockabilly twist of course. I hope you like it!

So.. where can I find this country?

Us Norwegians love to hear what other people think of us, and we asked some Americans on a reality show the following question: What is Norway? "Norway is the capital of Sweden".

I am sorry to disappoint you, but Norway is NOT the capital of Sweden. Norway is a country in Europe which borders to Sweden, Finland and Russia. The capital is called Oslo (see red dot). I personally think Oslo is the ugliest town in the entire country, but hey, who am I to tell.

The good thing about Oslo though, is that it's a good place for rockabilly! To name an example, The Reverend Horton Heat have played in Oslo and so have Jerry Lee Lewis. As you can see from this highly professional picture, they both love Norway. Hehe!

There's also plenty of concert halls and some treasure shops which makes the city good for vintage and rockabilly clothes hunting, plus the chance to catch some great shows. Oslo Tattoo Convention is also a happening once a year, so it's not that bad!

We have a coast line that stretches 25 000 kilometres (or 52 000 if you include all the islands and fjords). Needless to say, fishing is huge is Norway!

The Kingdom of Norway is a Nordic unitary constitutional monarchy, and belonging to this territory we can find the Western portion of the Scandinavian peninsula, Jan Mayen, Svalbard and the Bouvet Island. If you travel to Svalbard you can see polar bears in the streets (!) and if you are going for a walk on the island if could be a good idea to bring a weapon like a gun or something. If you're going on a guided trip the guide will be armed, just in case you should meet an angry polar bear! I've never been there myself, but my Dad have. He loved it, and I really wish I could go there some day.

Our King is called Harald, and he's hilarious. In a good way! I think he's adorable, and apparently he's such a nice down to Earth kinda guy as well. He normally doesn't look so confused as this, but I think it's a great picture, hehe. I wonder what he's up to... "What concert should I go to...Reverend Horton Heat.. OR Jerry Lee Lewis...?".
He openly cried on TV when making his speech to the people after July 22, and I think it shows how "normal" he actually is.

How does it look like?

Norway is a beautiful country. Fjords, mountains, water falls.. you name it. The scenery changes dramatically. I am from the East of Norway, close to Oslo. The terrain is mainly flat and city like, but when I moved to where I'm studying now, I was stunned. This photo is from my hometown. You can see the river Glomma, but no mountains or anything special.

This is where I live now. Can you tell the difference? This tiny place is surrounded by huge mountains, we have the fjord and it's just... so beautiful. This is just an example on how it can change, from East to West.

This photo is taken in Geiranger, not too far from where I live at the moment. Gorgeous! When I get my driver's license I have to go there, it's just amazingly beautiful.

Some random facts about Norway, you say?

- Our language is called Norwegian. Not Norw-ish!

- There's approximately 5 million people living here.

- Our national day is on the 17th of May, and we celebrate with parades and music by local bands. It's one of my favorite traditions, and I've participated each year since I was 6. I play the flute, and last year I looked like this:

- The lady next to me is wearing her bunad, which is our national costume. You would choose your bunad according to where you're from, or where your family is from. I don't have one, but if I decide to get one, it would be the "Nordlandsbunad" since my Dad is from Nordland (Northern part of Norway). It looks like this:
- We have two written languages: nynorsk (new-Norwegian) and bokmål.

- Norway is divided into 19 counties, + Jan Mayen and Svalbard.

- Our money is called "kroner". £1 = ca. 8,85 kroner. $1 = ca. 5,58 kroner.

- Our national anthem is called "Ja vi elsker dette landet" which means (stupidly translated, "yes we love this country" and sounds like this. The video has subtitles (sing along!) and some nice pictures from the country you've just read about.

To add one final touch of "me" to this "I'm Norwegian" post, here's some rockabilly music from the Norwegian rockabilly group The Lucky Bullets.

With that my dear readers, I will finish this blog post. I hope you liked it, and maybe you've learnt some new things? For my next YouTube tutorial I'll put in some Norwegian for you to hear. Any words in particular you want to know? Leave me a comment or let me know on my Facebook page or Twitter!

Some lovely things from BooBooKitty Couture

Hello! I haven't had internet over the last few days, but I am back now! It's weird really, I've missed my Twitter friends and you guys.. No internet for 4 days and I'm in panic. I've went to school one day (voluntarily) and extra early two days just to have internet access..
Addicted, me? Nooo....

I think we all know that I'm a Dolly Cool girl... and I mainly buy my stuff from her. Although sometimes I go a bit naughty and get stuff from other cool people, and this time I decided to check out BooBoo Kitty Couture's Etsy shop. I saw a tweetpic from BooBoo Kitty of a lovely pink rose girly head scarf and decided I had to have it. When it got launched in the online store later that night I also discovered a few more. I am really bad at deciding, and I often end up with three things just because I couldn't decide in the first place.

Here's the head scarves I ended up with. The first one is the pink rose one, the one in the middle is a hula pinup Hawaiian inspired head scarf and the last one is a leopard and Sailor Jerry inspired scarf. For those of you who know me, I love Captain Morgan and Sailor Jerry, therefore the last one had to be in my life as soon as possible. I love that the rose and leopard are two sided and you can use them however you want.

Here's some "in hair" photos

The pink rose.

I absolutely love how the light color of the fabric goes with my hair. This is perfect for Summer!

Sailor Jerry

This is the bad ass cool one! Leopard and rum hehe. Love it!

Hawaiian pin up girl

Again, perfect for Summer! *doing a hula dance*

What do you think? I love them, but I also love my Dolly Cool head scarves. In general.. I love head scarves. Not only are they pretty to look at, but they are great for a bad hair day! Head scarves are also a popular rockabilly hair accessory and can turn your look from "normal" to rockabilly in a fix :)

I'm hoping that our internet will stay with us now, and remember to come join me on Twitter! I'm @themissnextdoor and it's great fun!

5 years is a long time..

This upcoming Sunday is a bit of a special day for me. Not really in a good way, but kind of good after all. I warn you, the pictures may be a bit disturbing.

5 years ago, I had a terrible accident which led me to crushing my ankle to pieces. It's weird how you always complain about the small things, until something big happens to you.

I remember sitting there seeing my ankle twisted out of position and I screamed. I screamed so loud I could hear the echo from the other side of the river coming back at me. A truck driver drove past and asked me if I was okay. Stupid question really, can't you see I've broken my
ankle? He called for an ambulance and drove away. I was left there on my own and I just kept on screaming for help. Writing this brings back a lot of painful memories, but I am happy to see that I've managed to live 5 years with this. I know my ankle will be like this forever, but I've made it so far, why not continue?

The ambulance arrived and they had to pull my broken ankle joint into place (imagine that feeling..) and they drove me to the hospital. They had to pull the joint back into place again and from there it's all a blur. They drugged me so I couldn't feel the pain, and I have no idea how long I was in there.

I remember being rushed into surgery, desperately crying when they pushed my bed away from my Mum and Dad. I had never been in hospital before.

I woke up in a room several hours later. Couldn't remember a thing. Then I saw my leg. It wasn't a nice sight, and they told me how bad it was. I remember asking if I'd be able to walk again. I was only 17. "Don't count on it", the Doctor said. From there I just wanted to die.

What now?

My leg after I woke up. You see those spiky things into my ankle joint? Yeah, they're actually stuck into the joint. Same with the two on the middle of the calf as well.

I was in hospital for 16 painful days. I had surgery twice, and still they told me that my ankle would never work normally again. I was in horrible pain and drugged on morphine most of the time. It's horrible to say now, but I actually wished that the nurses would make a mistake and give me an overdose of morphine, I just couldn't see my life going on without being able to walk. It is really horrible to think that I had those ideas back then. I'm so glad they knew what they were doing, hehe!
The X-ray

The not so beautiful sight when they changed my bandage.. The spiky things (what can I call them) made holes in my calf and you could actually see straight into the bone.

After 16 days the Doctor came in and told me I could go home. It was the best day ever. I had no energy, had lost weight and was weak. I had to use crutches for 3 months and I was pretty much helpless. You feel pretty bad when you have to have someone washing you in the shower, sitting down. Not being able to carry anything, struggling with whatever you're doing. It wasn't funny, but thankfully my parents and friends were GREAT and helped me through it.

We removed my bandage at home to wash my leg. I cried when I saw my foot for the first time after surgery.

I had a goal with the crutches. For my graduation day from floristry school I wanted to walk up and get my diploma without the crutches.

And so I did.

It took months before I was able to walk normally again. They told me I shouldn't count on walking again, and I wanted to prove them wrong. Even though, for 5 years... every single day, every single step I take.. It feels like someone has shot nails into your ankle joint and you have to walk around with that feeling. Every day. But still, I can walk.

The healed scars. They're not that red anymore and they turned out pretty nice!

Since that day, I've moved away from home, I'm close to finishing university. I've done SO much. I am so proud to see where I am today. From being stuck in that hospital bed getting the news that I wouldn't be able to walk ever again to now.

So proud.

Some evenings when the pain is too much for me to handle, I can't hold back the tears. I cry and ask "why me??", but luckily my amazing boyfriend and fiance helps me through those moments and he gets me thinking about where I am now. I totally proved those doctors wrong!!

I know my injury isn't the worst thing in the world. I could have lost a leg.. or broken my neck. It really makes me think. I've survived this for 5 years.. is it really that hard to be me? Not really.

Here's some photos of my leg now. It took about 3 months of physio and a lot or work to make it work a "normal" ankle again, well, at least as good as possible.

My tattoo got split in half (you can see the scar), but my tattoo artist managed to save it for me almost 2 years after the surgery. Tattooing on scars is awesome, you can't feel a thing!

My very first tattoo... just made it!

The size difference isn't really that big, but still, I wish it never happened.

"Scars are there to remind us of where we've been".

What's wrong with people

Hello and happy Friday!

I wanted to share something with you. As you know, I'm doing my 3 week school placement nowadays. We have finished 2 of 3 weeks, and I cannot wait for next week to be over.

Note: This is only general talk about my experience. I'm not mentioning where I am or any names, but I need to get this out of my system.

There are of course good days. I love it when the kids come up to me to tell me something, or when they want me to help them out. I love it when they say "I really like your hair" in a private conversation because it's a bit embarrassing to tell when others are around. I love the little chats with the girls and the boys on a late Friday, I love hearing about their plans for the weekend. Days like these are the ones I remember and think of when everything goes wrong.

The last few days have been good, but when the bad days come... I want to go home and cry.

When I lived in Belfast, I did 6 weeks of placement in a primary school. It was the best 6 weeks ever when it comes to placement. The kids were so well-mannered and polite, and I was in tears the day I was done and left the place for the last time. In Norway, the kids are so different. Well, at least some of them are. Over the last two weeks I've experienced things like;

- been called a fat bitch (with matching pig sounds).
- had pears thrown at me when I was on duty in the break.
- told to go to hell.
- had some other really mean words yelled to my face (they're Norwegian and I can't really translate them, but we're talking like c*** and fat p***y).
- I asked someone politely to move to their desk, and in response I got all my books shoved off my table.

"Small" things like that. I know I shouldn't take it personally and I know they don't mean it (well I hope they don't mean it), but it really makes me angry and sad. How can you raise your kids into being like this to their teachers? How can you as a parent accept this? We call home to parents all the time to tell them how their kids are doing, and still they keep on treating us like we're shitty people. I'm sorry kids, but I am actually spending my day and free time from 8 am to 4 pm taking care of YOU! I'm teaching you stuff you will need, believe me!!

Okay, I don't want them to die. But the picture was way too funny!

I personally think it's horrible that kids can act like this. We're not talking 6 year olds, but the slightly older ones (14 and up). I'm not specifically talking about the kids at my school either, but Norwegian kids in general. Where are their manners? If there's one thing I've learned from this.. I'm NEVER going to apply for a job at a school for kids at that age. I wanna work with the older ones, the 17+ group, who actually wants to learn something (most of them, hehe).

I'm counting the days, and next Friday I will be the happiest person ever. I'm never going back there and I will never hear the words "you fat bitch" in my face ever again.

Woopety-do, here's something for you!

Hello!

I made a new tutorial today! My first take on the psychobilly look. I've always loved this look, but it's not really "me". Although, I tried my very best and I think it turned out pretty cool. What you think?

While I'm here I have to tell you about something that happened to me today. A lady posted on my Facebook page the following comment; "Everyone who likes rockabilly music deserves shooting!" What the hell? I reported her for bullying/harassment! Haha! Some people just do my head in.. what is wrong with the world. I really hate Lady Gaga and music like that, but I would never hope for anyone of you liking her to get shot! Gahhh rant over! Hehe.

I hope you've had a lovely weekend! Now sit back and enjoy my tutorial. It's as always full of funny accents, weird ways of making up sentences and there's a little moustache hidden in there. Enjoy!

Rockabilly half moon nails

Hello! I hope you're all having a great evening so far :)

I decided to make a little quick video on how I do my half moon nails. It was very impulsive (and therefore maybe not that good), and I decided not to speak.. so if you're tired of me rambling on and on with my accent, here's a good video for you! Hehe!

I don't know what's happened to the quality of my videos. I need to sort this out before I make my next tutorial.. I've done the same as the last ones, and suddenly they're bad quality. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

I'm still alive

Hey people!

I haven't been around for a few weeks, and I can already see that I'm losing people's attention... Unfortunately I can't please all, and I'm sorry for that, but hey. What can you do?

The reason for my absence is simple. I went home to my parent's house to attend our neighbour's funeral. During the weekend I was home, I spent my days with family and friends, and I was also out test driving with my mum. Busy busy! I then headed back here and the morning after my teacher's placement started.

I'm placed in a local school and I'm doing three weeks there. I'm almost done with my first week, and now for the exciting part; All the "real teachers" of the school is leaving!! It's up to us students to keep the school standing for the next two weeks. I leave here early in the morning and I'm not home until 4 or 5, depending on if I get a ride home or not. Then it's dinner time and when dinner's down I'm just..knackered. Spending my evening on the sofa watching Desperate Housewives and off to bed early.

THAT'S why I've been "gone". For those of you following me on Twitter, I'm not very active there at the moment either, but that's gonna change! Come join me, I'm easily found; @themissnextdoor :)

Alright.. That's me for today, I just wanted to let you all know! I will leave you with my latest YouTube video. It includes awesome hair and random dancing. Worth a watch!

Guess what my back tattoo is!
